Word that results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) had been ‘‘leaked’’ spread like wildfire hours before the formal declaration of results.

The IIM-A, while denying that there had been any breach, admitted that it was possible people had viewed for sometime ‘‘live-testing’’ of the data base being uploaded on its website.

Vijaya Sherry Chand, Member CAT group and Chairman Admissions committee at IIM-A, said: ‘‘There has been no breach or leak of the results. The results have been ready for the last few days and ‘live testing’ of the data base was being carried out by IIM-A on its website.’’

‘‘Testing of the results was done on an open link of the website and if anyone clicks on the site when the testing is being done the person could have access to the results. This testing is done just to make sure that all links on the site are working.’’ Such testing of results have been carried out by the IIM-A for the last two years.

According to Sherry Chand, testing is done a day before the results are declared. He said the rumours would not affect plans to declare the CAT results tonight.

‘‘We are going ahead with our plans of announcing the CAT results tonight and these will be uploaded on all six IIM websites by midnight. We will also be mailing to scores of individual candidates tomorrow,’’ he said.
