Caught behind, for the right reasons

His advice to get in against India with four outright quicks was kept aside and the Australian skipper decided to include Brad Hogg as a spin option to his other three seamers in the first Test being played here. But Glenn McGrath isn’t complaining. Rather he is all smiles as Ricky Ponting’s boys have just presented his foundation a big fat cheque of $72,000 just from a day’s play.

He has to thank Adam Gilchrist in principle for that —every catch that Gilchrist takes with the special pink gloves that he is wearing to attract attention towards the initiative, the sponsors donate $18,000 to the McGrath Breast Cancer Foundation.

Brett Lee and Stuart Clark can be proud of their contribution for forcing the nicks while Wasim Jaffer, Yuvraj Singh, Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan played their ‘unwilling’ role towards the noble venture. Sourav Ganguly had already done his bit for charity by donating his jumper to the Bradman Museum, but the deeds of some of his teammates left the Indian team in need for a little aid themselves.

‘It’s magnificent to have been able to contribute to that. We try to make sure we get the ball through to Gilly at decent pace, and at the right line and length. If you can do that, the results are bound to come,” says Lee after the end of day’s play.

And Clark, who looked very pleased with his efforts on the day had some better wishes for the second innings. “I wish we can get to nick ten in the second innings,” he joked. Not that the Indians will appreciate this as funny.
