CBI Director Vijay Shanker has been given an eight-month extension till his retirement from the services in July next year. The extension by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet was necessitated since he has completed his two-year tenure as head of the investigating agency.

Banking Secretary Vinod Rai has been appointed as the next Comptroller and Accountant General (CAG). He is expected to take over in January.

The Centre is, meanwhile, learnt to be contemplating a three-month extension for Expenditure Secretary Sanjiv Mishra so that he can continue till the next Budget.

Other appointments cleared by the panel include that of Subramanyam Vijay Kumar as additional secretary in the Ministry of Mines. The 1976-batch Himachal Pradesh-cadre officer replaces Pradeep Kumar. BS Meena, currently on compulsory wait in the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises, Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, will be the Additional Secretary and Finance Advisor, Ministry of Steel.

The names of Shekhar Aggarwal as additional secretary, Defence, and G S Chaturvedi as additional secretary, Health, are also learnt to have been cleared.
