MUMBAI, JUNE 30: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers in Mumbai can look forward to intensive training programmes in areas relatively new to crime investigation. The CBI director, Trinath Mishra, who is in town for a two-day visit, told The Indian Express that while he was satisfied with the competence of officers as far as conventional cases were concerned, the competence required for investigating new kinds of frauds needed building up.

The CBI has started training programmes to meet new challenges in criminal investigation which involve a study of stock exchanges, the markets, NBFCs, electronic crime, also cyber crime, Mishra said. The agency’s training academy at Ghaziabad had already undertaken such programmes, particularly with a view to enhancing computer literacy among officers.

The CBI chief had interactive meetings with officers involved in investigation stage in the various units of the agency in the city and also reviewed some cases. He, however, declined to identify any ofthe cases.

Mishra also declined to comment on the sensitive Panna Mukta case in which two petitions were pending before Delhi High Court. The CBI has been ordered to complete its investigation in the Panna Mukta oil field deal as well as the more knotty question of the disappearance of a crucial file related to the case by July end. The CBI chief was only willing to reveal that the submissions would be made to the court on the appointed day.

CBI COMPLEX: The CBI will have an exclusive office complex of its own at CBD Belapur once the proposed Rs 10 crore project comes up near the CGO complex in Belapur, Mishra said. One special crime unit of the CBI is currently located in this (CGO) complex.

Most CBI offices in Mumbai are located in tenanted premises, and the agency has been shopping for more space in the city.
