Two days after Congress president Sonia Gandhi said at Rae Bareli that the census goof-up would be probed, Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Saturday ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Sources said the inquiry will be conducted by Home Secretary Dhirendra Singh, who will go into all aspects, including the ‘‘intentions’’ behind the release of the religion-based figures of the report. When asked about the time-frame of the inquiry, the sources said: ‘‘It will be completed very soon’’.

The release of the data by Census Commissioner J.K. Banthia had sparked off a controversy, with the Sangh Parivar going to town against the high growth rate of Muslims and insisting that if unchecked, the country will be gradually dominated by Muslims.

The sources said that the inquiry will also examine the manner in which such data had been released in the past.
