Chancellor puts V-C on high pedestal

PUNE, February 10: Most certainly, it was a touching moment for Dr Vasant Gowariker, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Pune. With a month left for his term to end, the V-C for three years now has had his share of highs and lows, thanks to an ever alert management council and the no-nonsense non-teaching staff. But in what could be aptly described as poetic justice, it was none other than the Chancellor of all universities in the State and Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander who gave a pat on Gowariker’s back for his brilliant contribution, while launching the golden jubilee celebrations of the University of Pune today.

"A chancellor does not easily give complements to the existing V-C. And that too especially in front of distinguished V-Cs of other universities. However departing from the norm – since Gowariker is quitting office in a month or so, I would like to complement him from bringing a fresh lease of life to the university," Alexander praised.

"When I interviewed Gowariker along withtwo-three others for the post, I straightaway offered him the job despite his term being restricted to three years rather the full five-year tenure. I can say that his contribution in three years has been better that what other V-Cs would have done in their regular term of five years. He has taken the university system out of a rut and given new hope," the Chancellor said.
