BJP for debate on Article 356
Following the embarrassment the government is facing over the Bihar issue, the BJP has adopted the strategy that offence is the best form of defence. Acting in tandem, Union Home Minister L. K. Advani and BJP general secretary M. Venkaiah Naidu today called for a nationwide debate on the use of Article 356, since it could not be imposed on Bihar which was the "fittest case" for it.
Al Umma chief charged
After a seven-month long investigation, the special investigation team (SIT) of the crime branch today filed a 840-page preliminary chargesheet into the Kovai serial blasts case before the Fifth Judicial Magistrate court in Coimbatore on Monday, naming 166 persons, including the Al Umma chief, as accused.
IA hikes fares by 11.2 pc
Indian Airlines today decided to hike passenger fares by 11.2 per cent across the board, but exempted the northeastern sector from this raise. Thenew fares would be effective from October 1, it was decided "unanimously" at the IA board meeting.
