CHANDIGARH, JANUARY 27: The Samajwadi Party has decided to field Amar Singh Chahal, president of the District Bar Association, from the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency in the forthcoming polls. Chahal’s candidature was finalised following the recommendations of the party’s local convener, Shivi Jaiswal, and chairman of the State Election Committee Maj P.P. Singh (retd).

Literacy centre opened

The World Peace Organisation Mission today opened the 11th Literacy Centre for the children of construction labourers. This centre has a capacity of educating 500 to 600 children, out of which, 100 are expected to be regular students.

Katia case to come up on Feb 4

The Katia kidnapping and molestation case was adjourned without being taken up for hearing as UT Chief Judicial Magistrate Darshan Singh was out of station today. The case will now come up on February 4.

Deutsche Bank deposit rates up

Deutsche Bank AG, one of the top 10 banks in the world, has increased its deposit rates to 13 per cent per annum for a period of 30 to 91 days. The bank has increased rates for other tenors by 0.5 to 1 per cent per annum The bank has recently launched an ATM at Chandigarh,and extended banking hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Poll observers arrive in City

M.M. Srivastava, and J.S. Arora, who have been appointed as election observers, general and expenditure respectively, by the Election Commission of India for the Chandigarh Parlimentary constituency, arrived here yesterday. After holding discussions with the election officers, the two had a meeting with the political parties also. The two would be available for public at the UT Guest House till February 2 to cater to any poll-related complaints.

Fire in NIFT building

A fire broke out in a Sector 27 building housing the Jat Bhawan and the local campus of the National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD) late on Sunday night. Sources said the fire broke out in the basement at around 10 p.m., where some beddings were stacked. Though no one was injured, the total loss is estimated at nearly Rs 20,000.

Two agents held for murder

Two commission agents Praveen Kumar and Sunil Kumar, accused of the murder of a munim working in their firm, were arrested yesterday after blockades lasting nearly four hours on the Ambala-Hisar road by palledars and munims working in the Anaj Mandi.
