CHANDIGARH, Nov 15: Defending champions Chandigarh began their campaign with a bang scoring a convincing 8-0 win over hapless Goa in hockey event in the under-19 boys group in their opening league match in pool `A’ on the second day of the 44th National School Games at Sector 42 Sports Complex here today.

Later, Chandigarh thrashed lowly Jammu and Kashmir by a margin of 17-0 in their second league encounter.

In the Chandigarh-Goa tie, the former dominated the contest and shot into the lead through Rajbir. Prabhjeet and Inderjeet shot three goals each.

Inderjeet and Rajbir were also instrumental in team’s victory against minnows Jammu and Kashmir. The game was confined to Jammu’s half, who hardly crossed the half-line.

Sandeep Kumar (5), Inderjeet (4), Rajbir (3) Lakhwinder (2) and Prabhjeet (2) were marksmen for Chandigarh team.

Hosts Chandigarh girls under-19 hockey team also had a smooth sailing in their opening league match. They beat Goa by five goals to nil. Jyoti Bali put her team ahead in the first quarter of the match. Thereafter there was no looking back. Ashriti Topo scored twice while Sunita and Eram got one each for the winners.

Chandigarh girls basketball team (under-17), however, suffered a defeat at the hand of Madhya Pradesh 12-44.

The Chandigarh girls handball (under-17) team played a 5-5 draw with Assam.

Simpy and Reena were the main scores for Chandigarh. Babbly shot four including a hat-trick for Assam.

After the match, Mohinder Pal, Chandigarh team coach lodged a protest gainst Assam for fielding two overage players.

Bihar, who dominated the boys and girls handball event in the under-17 group in the last edition of the meet did not reach the venue. Uttar Pradesh got a walkover from Bihar in the boys section.

In the girls section, last year’s runners-up Punjab outplayed Madhya Pradesh 19-6. Krishan was the main architect of the team’s win, scoring 13 goals while Charanjeet netted three and Harbir one for the winners.

Manisha (3) Anamika (2) were the main scorers for MP.
