NEW DELHI, June 9: The Central Bureau of Investigation today chargesheeted former telecom minister Sukh Ram accusing him of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The chargesheet filed in the court of special judge Ajit Bharihoke alleged that Sukh Ram had amassed properties and cash worth over Rs five crore during the period 1991-96. Sukh Ram’s total income during the same period amounted to Rs 85 lakh, it said.

Bharihoke fixed July 7 for scrutiny of documents and consideration of the chargesheet. The chargesheet said there was sufficient evidence in support of prosecution allegations that the former minister had abused his position as a public servant by amassing huge assets and failed to give any satisfactory explanation for the same.

It said Sukh Ram acquired assets during the check period to the tune of over Rs 5.74 crore which were substantially disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The chargesheet said during the check period, the likely savings could have been at best be Rs 38.10 lakh.

The assets acquired by the former minister included a farm house valued at Rs 41.30 lakh, a bungalow on the outskirts of Delhi worth Rs 29.45 lakh and investments made towards renovation of Samkhetar house at Mandi in Himachal Pradesh worth Rs 5.69 lakh.

Besides, Sukh Ram was found in possession of hard cash amounting to Rs 3.61 crore when raids were conducted at his residential premises in Delhi and Mandi, it said.

The chargesheet said Sukh Ram had also given a loan of Rs 1.05 crore to one Chander Kant Khemka who surrendered the amount to CBI during investigation.Besides, several bank accounts of Sukh Ram and his wife Ram Devi maintained in different banks in Delhi, Shimla and Mandi had a cash balance of over Rs 19.13 lakh at the end of the check period.
