‘‘Agar bar bar janam le kar mein Narwana ke logon ko apni chamri ki jooti bhi banwa kar dun to bhi mein in ke ehsan nahin utar sakta (I can’t repay the debt of gratitude to the people of Narwana even if I become their shoe).’’ Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala was at his elements today as he sought another term from voters of this sleepy township that has sent him to the state Vidhan Sabha thrice.

It’s another matter that soon after filing his papers, he announced his decision to contest from Rori as well. But then, given the blow that Narwana dealt him in 1996, little wonder he is playing safe.

Chautala came in a kilometre-long cavalcade to file his nomination papers before Returning Officer Mohammad Shayin. Travelling in his white Ambassador followed by his ‘Vijay Rath’, he headed for the mazaar of Baba Gaibi Sahib.

Later, while forwarding the papers to Shayin, he asked: ‘‘Papers mein koi kami beshi ho to bata dein, mere pass aur bhi hain.’’ When told to take oath, he quipped: ‘‘Mein to shapath lene ke liye hi khara hoon.’’

Once outside, he promised free and fair polls, all the while accusing the Congress of having sold its tickets. He was equally scathing about the BJP. ‘‘Mark my words, the bird called BJP will be extinct after elections,’’ he said.
