The Railways’ biggest loss in terms of revenues come from the Second Class (Ordinary) traveller for whom it realises an average of Rs 17 per passenger against a cost incurred of Rs 32, thus causing a loss of 47 per cent. In fact, Railways only make profits on AC Chair Car and AC 3-Tier operations. This information was provided in the Lok Sabha on Thursday in reply to a starred question by Dr Vallabhbhai Kathiria. The average classwise costs per passenger, the fares realised and the resultant profit and loss are as follows.
