PUNE, Dec 21: Anu Aga, chairperson of Thermax Ltd, today suggested that Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations should work in tandem and implement their development plans jointly.

Inaugurating a round-table conference on “Towards environmental friendly Pune,” organised by Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), Aga underlined the need for better city planning in view of the increasing pollution. Stating that Pune was fifth most polluted city in the country, Aga said pollution had reached alarming level in the city.

She said both the municipal corporations should put brakes on the widespread dumping of debris and the release of industrial effluents in the rivers. She said the civic bodies should make all efforts to rid the rivers of the daily pollution doses and preserve their beauty.

Aga maintained that better synchronised signalling system and effective public transport was need of the hour in the city. She suggested that public transport should use unleaded petrol to bring down the pollution. Aga said the corporations should stop regularising the illegal constructions after fine was paid by the involved parties.

She suggested that MCCIA should set up a permanent group, involving the non-government organisations, to identify the problems related with environment and to solve them. Participating in the discussion, senior environmentalist Tara Warrior lamented that environment was never given priority by planners. She said the the issue remained neglected even in the education as students were never taught about the environment.

Senior social activist Banu Koyaji suggested setting up of mohalla committees to tackle the garbage problem. She felt that increasing population in the city was the main problem while tackling the environmental problems.
