MAY 23: The city police today claimed to have busted a gang involved in betting and satta activities for the India-Pakistan Pepsi Independence Cup match. Five persons have been arrested. The police claimed to have seized Rs 74,000 in cash and a 13 line mini-telephone system, a mobile phone, a calculator, a colour television and documents showing gambling entries.Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap and raided hideouts in Chembur and Pant Nagar in Ghatkopar. The persons arrested were found accepting huge bets for the India- Pakistan match played at Chennai on Wednesday. It may be recalled that the match had generated a considerable amount of interest among the sports lovers. They operated the syndicate and accepted huge bets through bookies from Ghatkopar.The accused have been arrested under the Gambling Act and Indian Telephone Act,while further investigations are on.
