MUMBAI, October 5: Madhukar Ramchandra Maurya, a member of the Chhota Rajan gang, was killed in an encounter with the police at Trombay early this morning. Maurya alias Matya or Mama, was wanted by the Mumbai police in several cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion.
Trombay police received information that Maurya was scheduled to be around the Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilisers (RCF) colony opposite Ashish Theatre, Marvalgaon, for extortion. Accordingly, a trap was laid by the police. Maurya, accompanied by an associate, arrived at the spot in an autorickshaw at 5 am.
As the duo alighted from the rickshaw the police asked Maurya to surrender, when the latter fired four rounds at the police with a country-made revolver katta. The police retaliated by firing six rounds at Maurya. He sustained severe bullet injuries and collapsed on the spot, informed the police. His associate, however, managed to escape during the exchange of fire. Maurya was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital but was declared dead before admission, the police said.
Three cases, including one of murder, have been registered against Maurya at Pantnagar police station. A case of an attempt to murder has been registered at Vashi police station, while six different cases have been registered at Trombay police station, the police added. This is the eighteenth member to have been killed in police encounter from the Chhota Rajan gang.
