After being trapped inside a borewell in Hulaspura village for over 27 hours, two-and-a-half-year-old Vandana was rescued by an Army team on Wednesday night. District Magistrate of Agra, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, said Vandana was taken to S N Medical College in Agra for medical examination.According to reports, Vandana, daughter of Bangali Singh, a resident of Holaspura on the Agra-Mumbai highway, was playing with her elder sister in front of her house. She accidentally stepped over a nearby 180-feet-deep borewell. Although the abandoned borewell was covered with a sack, she fell deep down into it along with the sack at around 7.45 pm on Tuesday. She got stuck at 45 feet down under. Her uncle Laxman Singh immediately informed the district administration and the police and 509 EME Agra unit rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation. A JCB bulldozer and earthmovers were used to dig a borewell parallel to the one Vandana had fallen into. Oxygen was administered to her though a pipe. The DM, DIG Kamal Saxena, SSP Neera Rawat, CMO Ramratan Singh and a team of doctors also rushed to the spot. Efforts were made to talk to the girl who was crying for her mother.Several cases of children falling into uncovered borewells have been reported from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka in the last couple of years. In July 2006, a five-year-old boy, Prince, captured the imagination of the country when he survived a 50-hour ordeal after falling into an open borewell in Kurukshetra in Haryana.
