Six foreigners have been sentenced to 10 days of detention for upsetting public order, Beijing police said on Thursday, without giving specific details of their activities.
“Thomas and five other foreigners were apprehended by police on August 19 for upsetting public order,” said a statement from Beijing police, without identifying ‘Thomas’ or the others further.
“Based on Article 23 in the Public Security Administration Punishment Law, the Dongcheng station of the Beijing police decided to give the six 10 days of administrative detention,” said a statement from Beijing police.
Administrative detention is a punishment that can be meted out by Chinese police without having to go through the courts.
Students For a Free Tibet said it assumed the six were American pro-Tibet activists who police detained in Beijing on Tuesday.
