Glasgow, May 24: China ensured a successful defence of the Sudirman Cup, the world team championship, with a 5-0 win over South Korea in the final today. In a repeat of their group match on Thursday, the top seeds settled the issue by winning the first three rubbers to quash Korea’s hopes of regaining the trophy they held in 1991 and 1993.

All-England champions Liu Yong and Ge Fei were never troubled in setting the Chinese on the road to victory in the mixed doubles with a 15-7, 15-8 win over Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min, but the singles were closer encounters. Dong Jiong, the World No 1, took the opening game 15-9 against Park Sung Woo before the hard-working Korean fought back.

He produced a mixture of immaculate defence but eventually lost 15-9, 15-11.In the women’s singles, Gong Zhichao, stepping in for World No 1 Ye Zhaoying who had suffered a shock defeat to Susi Susanti in the semi-final win over Indonesia, also had to stage a comeback.

Having lost the opener 2-11, Lee Joo Hyun led 7-3 in the second game before gong, the World No 2, stepped up a gear, and went on to clinch China’s win 11-2, 11-7.
