MUMBAI, Sept 28: Defender Prashant Thiruthiyil Karunakaran struck St Xavier’s a body blow when his lone goal, in the closing stages of the match, allowed Chinai to sneak into the quarter-finals of the inter-collegiate football tournament at School Sports Centre, Azad Maidan today.

The victory gave Chinai the crucial second spot in Pool III. An excited Prashant said after the match, “This is my first goal in the tournament. I am glad it came at such a crucial juncture.”

After St Andrew’s won all three league matches to top the pool, Chinai and Xavier, tied with one victory each, faced sudden death. Xavier’s could not afford a draw, as Chinai enjoyed a better goal difference. That propelled them into action as the strapping Prahlad Tanwar’s left-footer, after he had side-stepped his defender, rocked the side post early in the first half.

Another shot at the iron works from the right by Godfrey Francis was all St Xavier’s could achieve as Chinai took charge. A booming 20-footer at the half-time whistlewas tipped over by St Xavier’s custodian Vineet Gangwani, who was to make a few more inspired saves.

The goal came 20 minutes into the second-half when Chinai received a free-kick outside the box after Colin Miranda was grievously fouled. Prashant received the indirect, and his right footer dipped in, past Vineet’s stretched hands. St Xavier’s came close to drawing even but custodian Conrad Correia made a crucial diving save to see Chinai through.

In another match, Rizvi and Mithibai played out a lacklustre goalless draw to qualify from Pool IV.
