The 19-year-old said she wasn’t sure if she had enough confidence to win this event. She didn’t show it, looking calm and cool as she used her fabulous flips to grab the gold.

“I think the biggest rival for me is myself,” said He, who was dealing with a sore knee. “If I can overcome myself, then that is a success.”

Karen Cockburn of Canada scored a 37.00 to get her second silver after also finishing in second place in Athens. Cockburn recovered from a second knee operation to compete in these games.

“Two weeks before the world championships, I couldn’t even walk,” said Cockburn, who got the bronze in 2000. “I got my surgery and started preparing for this and here I am.”

Ekaterina Khilko of Uzbekistan got the bronze with a 36.90.

“I didn’t think I could stay in third place as there are strong athletes from Russia, Ukraine and China,” she said. “It was totally unexpected because all of my competitors were strong.”

Germany’s Anna Dogonadze, who won gold in Athens, finished last with a score of 18.90 after falling during her routine. She has struggled with a back injury, but said Monday’s poor performance had nothing to do with that.

“I really have no idea,” she said of what caused her error. “I started out with enough height, but after my third jump I went off center.”
