
A Chinese engineer was seriously injured when an unidentified gunmen attacked him in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, witnesses said.
The gunmen shot the electrical engineer, identified as Yang, at Dargai Bazar in Malakand, a tribal region in the North West Frontier Province, at 10.30 am.
The engineer was rushed to a hospital in Dargai in a critical condition and doctors said he was operated on. The doctors said several bullets hit the engineer.
The engineer was working on a hydroelectric project in the area. Witnesses said Yang was attacked when he came along with a guard to Dargai Bazar for shopping. As Yang was returning to the project site, the gunmen stopped his car and started firing.
According to the engineer’s driver Imran, the gunmen asked him and the guard to get out of the car and then shot the engineer. The gunmen then fled after the attack.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
In August, local Taliban kidnapped two Chinese telecommunications engineers from Dir district of NWFP. One of them later escaped from the militants while the second is still in their custody.
Chinese firms are involved in several major infrastructure projects in Pakistan. Several Chinese workers have been targeted by Taliban militants in recent years.
