July 14: Seventeen years after the death of noted Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi, a chowk named after him at the junction of V.P.Road (Linking Road) and Main avenue facing ANZ Grindleys Bank at Santacruz, was inaugurated by ex-MP Sunil Dutt on Sunday.
The formal unveiling ceremony, organised by the late poet’s sister Sarwar Shafi and her husband Sabir Dutt, was attended by councillors of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation which had passed the proposal in December 1996. The proposal had been put forward by ex-councillor Jasbir Singh Sethi, an ardent fan of the lyricist, who then represented the constituency.
The ceremony was attended by councillors like Kranti Sathe, Madhura Chari, Kamini Bhatija, Priya Padwal. Bharati Aglave, Ashok Patil, Ramesh Mahadik and Baba Siddique and local MLA Jayashree Ramdas Nayak were also present.
At a get-together, noted Urdu poets like Javed Akhtar, Nida Fazli, Yusuf Nizam, writer Suraj Sanim, singer Jagjit Singh and composer Khayyam eloquently spoke about Sahir Ludhianvi’s contribution to Urdu through his books, his peotry and lyrics in films.
Sunil Dutt complimented BMC for naming a Chowk in Sahir’s memory.
The BMC has in the past named chowks in the city after film personalities like Shankar Jaikishan, Master Vinayak and Mukesh.
