NEW DELHI, February 3: Delhi police today tried to pass the buck on the identification of Christians in south Delhi which was reported by Express Newsline today. A letter from the Delhi Police today “officially” denied there was a “census” of Christians and said that they started “police patrolling, meetings etc.” to reassure Christians who were feeling apprehensive about their security. It said this was following a conversation of Father Anto with the CM.

Police Commissioner V.N. Singh and DCP (South) Pradeep Srivastava had confirmed the drive for verification of Christians. The Chief Minister’s office today clarified that no such direction came from Sheila Dikshit.

short article insert Father Anto’s parish spo-kesperson said that they had conveyed their apprehension to the CM after a Christian family had been threatened in Faridabad. The CM had taken prompt action and arranged for police protection in Faridabad.

Agency reports quoting Home Ministry sources said that the identification exercise an effort to provide a better security environment for the community which has recently come under attack in some states. Home Ministry sources add that the drill was being carried out in GK area of south Delhi where the elite among the community reside and who were considered to be more vulnerable. They added that the exercise would be expanded to the whole of Delhi. The advice for carrying out the identification had come from the security cell of the crime branch, they said.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the community continue to express their indignation at the identification drive. Dr Ambrose Pinto of Indian Social Institute, a Jesuits social action centre, said, “This (identification drive) is Hindutva to the core. This is not only atrocious, but also disgusting.” “The Christians in the country today are being targeted because they are a weak community. This is a campaign by the fascist forces,” he said. John Chathanat of Vidya Jyoti, a christian organisation, said, “Why only Christians? If it’s being carried out, it should be for every body”.
