CHANDIGARH, Sept 25: Central Industrial Security Force struggled to overcome plucky Shivalik Club in the inaugural match of the 29th Gurmit Memorial hockey tournament at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today. Young Shivalik Club held the securitymen to a one-all draw in the regulation 70-minute session. The issue was resolved in the tie-breaker session and CISF won with an aggregate 5-4 margin.
Goalkeeper Maninder Singh held the spotlight in the stipulated session despite his team losing the match.
He displayed good anticipation and made at least half a dozen spectacular saves. Shivalik Club defender Rajinder Kumar also put up a brave front to foil the CISF forwards on a number of occasions.
CISF were definately a better team. Their forwards were speedy and combined well but found Shivalik goalkeeper Maninder a hard nut to crack. CISF were awarded eight penalty corners in reply to five by Shivalik Club. They, however, forged ahead in the 17th minute through a field goal scored by Paramvir.
In the first half itself they had two more good chances to increase the lead. First Ravi Kumar, with goalkeeper Maninder Singh at his mercy, shot wide and later GV Ekka and Parvez bungled. Ekka’s weak shot was easily padded by goalkeeper Maninder and Parvez misdirected his shot.
Shivalik Club restored parity in the 43rd minute with a brilliant reverse shot by Prabhjot Singh.
In the tie-breaker, CISF scored through GV Ekka, Bharat Kumar, Gydiel Ekka, Partek Kumar. Paramvir missed his stroke. Inderjit, Gurpreet and Rajinder Kumar converted their strokes for Shivalik Club. Baljinder Singh and Harminder Singh were the off target.
Earlier, Chandigarh Hockey Association president Chander Sekhar, Punjab Inspector General of Police, inaugurated the tournament.
