Khesari dal campaigner Shantilal Kothari, whom this page featured a fortnight ago under the headline ‘A finger on the pulse’, has disputed parts of the report.

Kothari emphasises that he never said a) scientists were unanimous that over-consumption of the dal caused Lathyrism; b)that it has been scientifically proven to cause Lathyrism. He also says that he mentioned the safe and dangerous quantum of pulse merely to illustrate a point.

Vivek Deshpande replies: All through our conversation, Kothari emphasised the safe quantum for consumption. If his point, as he now makes it, was that Khesari has never been scientifically proven to cause Lathyrism, quantities become irrelevant. I stand by my report.
