Terming the Congress-JD(S) alliance in the state as ‘‘unholy’’, Karnataka BJP has decided to ‘‘play the role of a constructive Opposition’’ in the Assembly.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, state BJP president H.N. Ananth Kumar said the two parties had ‘‘breached and betrayed’’ the verdict of the people, which was against the Congress.

Recalling the statement of former chief minister S.M. Krishna on the eve of the election results that the people had rejected the Congress, Kumar said the Congress was making a back-door entry to occupy power.

‘‘Both JD(S) and Congress are on a ‘suicidal mode’ with the alliance. They will destroy themselves,’’ Kumar added.

Taking a dig at the JD(S), the BJP leader said, ‘‘Will the JD(S) implement the demands it made before the elections like setting up an inquiry into the land dealings of the previous government or seeking a ban on online lottery?’’

Asked why BJP was silent for 14 days on forming the government, Kumar said that the party adopted a wait-and-watch approach to see who would breach the people’s mandate first. The BJP-JD(U) alliance had emerged as the single largest group in the state, doubling its seats in the Assembly since the last elections and trebling its Lok Sabha strength, he pointed out.

Asked whether BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu would be renominated from the state to the Rajya Sabha, he said the Central Parliamentary Board would decide on the issue and added that the state unit of the party would be proud to re-elect him.
