VADODARA, July 2: State Health Minister Ashok Bhatt has appealed to the non-resident Indians (NRI) from Gujarat to extend financial and intellectual support for the upgradation of government medical colleges and hospitals of the State.

He was addressing a gathering at the SSG Hospital after inaugurating the Cobalt Cancer Treatment unit, set up with the help of North America branch of the Baroda Medical College Alumni Association, here on Thursday morning.Reiterating the government’s commitment to improve the condition of medical institutes in the State, Bhatt said that a drive had recently been initiated against quacks, while concerted efforts were being taken to improve functioning of medical institutes.

Praising Association president Madhubhai Parikh for the association’s financial aid for the past seven years, he welcomed his plan to set up a Baroda Cancer Society and a 30-bed cancer hospital. “I am ready to generate funds for the cause,” he said, appealing people to contribute generously for the cause.

M S University Chancellor Mrunalini Devi Puar, who was the chief guest on the occasion, in her address, praised the role played by association members in improving hospital services and said that their gesture had shown their love for their motherland. She appealed people to contribute for the further upgradation of the medical colleges and the hospitals of the State.

Cancer Research Institute, Ahmedabad, Pankaj Shah and Parikh also spoke on the occasion. Besides, BJP MLA Bhupendra Lakhawala and other senior party leaders from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, senior officials from Health department, Gandhinagar, Baroda medical college dean Dinesh Shah, medical superintendent K J Sheth and others were also present on the occasion. Kamal Pathak conducted the function and proposed the vote of thanks.
