Dalal Azmi, the runaway-Kuwait girl, and her husband Khader Basha have heaved a sigh of relief following assurances given by District Collector Jayesh Ranjan to rehabilitate them.

After landing in India, the couple had to undergo a jail term and constant attendance at courts in Chennai for flouting immigration laws.

With no livelihood of their own in India, they were living in utter poverty and depending entirely on the aged daily-wage-labourer parents of Khader Basha in his village Daluvaipalli in the district. Initial euphoria brought them offers of help from many quarters but none of them materialised. The two had a son Ibrahim, adding to the burden of the aged parents.

District Collector Jayesh Ranjan, after going through the report in these columns on Tuesday, responded positively and took up their case and offered to give the tormented couple the long-awaited help.

At a meeting with them, he promised to get Khader Basha a subsidised loan of Rs 1.2 lakh to buy an auto, arrange a job for Dalal Azmi as a tutor in Arabic in an Urdu school, and provide ration cards and a ‘‘pucca’’ house to the aged parents of Khader Basha in their native village or wherever they desired.

He also promised to intervene in the immigration case and get the cases dropped in Chennai and enable Dalal Azmi to become a citizen of India. Collector, who was moved by their tale of woe, thanked The Indian Express for bringing their issue into focus. He assured all possible help to the couple for their sustenance. The overjoyed couple thanked the Collector and The Indian Express for the help.
