CHANDIGARH, Oct 12: The Defence Institute of Information Technology, a centre to impart advanced computer and information technology (IT) training to Army personnel and their dependents was inaugurated by president of Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) Kusum Kala at Chandimandir Cantonment today.

This the first centre of its kind in the Western Command. More such institutes in other cantonments are planned.

Set up at a cost of about Rs 20 lakh, the centre presently offers four courses at heavily subsidised fees. The number of courses will be increased to eight in the near future.

As many as 120 students have been enrolled for the different courses, with an additional 150 Army personnel being sponsored by the Command Headquarters to undergo training in information technology.

Advanced multi-media work stations, video conferencing, digital photography, office automation peripherals and high-tech training aids with a richly stocked library are available at the institute.

Accreditation with the DOEACC in order to provide wider acceptance and recognition and to carry out `O’ Level courses is also on the anvil.
