Exports of computer hardware registered a growth of 50 per cent (45 per cent in dollar terms) during 2001-02, according to data compiled by Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). ‘‘In value terms, export of computer hardware is estimated at Rs 1,800 crore ($377 million) during 2001-02, compared to Rs 1,200 crore ($261 million) in 2000-01. Head stacks is the major item that pushed computer hardware exports followed by SMPS, scanners, PCs, add-on cards and printers,’’ says D.K. Sareen, ESC executive director. Head stacks clocked an export turnover of Rs 920 crore ($193 million) during 2001-02. Major destinations of exports were Malaysia, the UK, Mauritius, the US and UAE.Exports of switching mode power supply perked up from Rs 16 crore ($3 million) in 2000-01 to Rs 21 crore ($4.32 million) in 2001-02. Major destinations of export included the US, Singapore, Portugal, Bangladesh and Thailand. Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries emerged as major destinations for computer hardware exports that stood at Rs 1,325 crore ($278 million) during 2001-02 as against Rs 1,107 crore ($241 million in 2000-01.
