NEW DELHI, January 12: The Congress today tendered an unconditional apology to the minorities for having failed to prevent the destruction of Babri masjid in Ayodhya by the “saffron brigade” and said the party was committed to implement the court verdict on the controversial mandir-masjid issue.

Participating in the meet-the-press programme of the Press Club, Congress general secretary Madhavrao Scindia said the destruction of the mosque was a blackmark in the history of India and such an incident should not be allowed to be repeated.

The Congress, which was in power at the Centre when the demolition of the mosque took place, is ready to tender its deepest apology at any forum, he said.

Scindia said the Bharatiya Janata Party which promised a stable government at the Centre, was yet to resolve the internecine squabbles between the groups led by prime ministerial aspirant Atal Behari Vajpayee and party president L K Advani.

Contradictions have become the order of the day as the saffron party, in its hurry to grab power at the Centre, is wearing several masks. It is entering into unholy alliances mostly at the cost of professed principles of the party, he added.
