The Congress outspent the BJP in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to garner votes. Going by the figures declared to the Election Commission, the Congress expenditure comes to Rs 125 crore as against BJP’s Rs 102 crore.
The “India Shinning” campaign of the BJP has not been accounted for. ‘‘That campaign has not been identified specifically. The overall figures have been given,’’ EC sources said.
The details, the EC officials said, would be available on the website by tomorrow. The slogan “Congress ka haath, aam admi ke saath” got the party back to power after an eight-year hibernation. But to send this pro-poor message to aam admi in the elections, Congress spent a record Rs 125 crore.
What’s even more interesting is that the CPI (M) outspent Mayawati’s BSP. While CPI-M spent Rs 8.26 crore (with lion share of Rs 72.21 lakh going to win all the 20 seats in Kerala) the BSP’s expenditure has been shown at Rs 42.05 crore. ‘‘The Commission has not cross-checked or scrutinised the expenditure statements yet,’’ officials said.
