A day after Congress high command allotted ticket to party Member of Parliament Madan Lal Sharma’s brother Sham Sharma from Akhnoor seat, the party faced serious jolt when the former minister and senior Congress leader Gobind Ram Sharma resigned from the party today.

Sharma, who was in race for the ticket, is considered to be a strong brahmin leader and is stated to have good influence on the voters. He resigned from Congress along with a large number of his supporters, and is likely to file his nomination as an independent candidate tomorrow.

This has deepened the problems of Congress candidate Sham Sharma, who is already facing revolt-like situation in Akhnoor. Block Congress committee leaders and senior members have strongly opposed his candidature.

Sources say many senior leaders had been ignored during ticket allocation. This has sparked a revolt against Sham Sharma, saying he is an outsider. Gibind Ram Sharma’s supporters said they would not accept a dynasty-like approach.

Gobind Ram had joined the Congress a year back in Delhi in the presence of party chief Sonia Gandhi and was hopeful that he would get a ticket from Akhnoor. Sources say that Sham Sharma got the ticket after Madal Lal assured victory for the party to the party high command. However, dissidence seems to be brewing against him.
