The Congress in Meghalaya is exploring the possibility of propping up a common Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) candidate and seems to be arm-twisting its partners to fall in line.

While the regional parties in the MDA — United Democratic Party , Meghalaya Democratic Party , Hills State People’s Democratic Party and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement — are keen to take on the Congress in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, C M D.D. Lapang has gone ahead and called a meeting of coalition partners to discuss the issue. Regional parties already had first round of meeting on Monday and they are schedule to meet soon. The Congress is acutely aware that if regional parties field a common candidate, chances of its candidate clinching Shillong Lok Sabha seat would be slim.
