NEW DELHI, MARCH 25: Mandawali MLA of the Congress party Meera Bhardwaj’s home in Patparganj, east Delhi, was burgled early this morning. All the jewellery in the house and Rs 75,000 in cash is missing. The police have detained their domestic helper Sanjay.
It was Sanjay who first informed the family about the burglary. He was sleeping in the room, which had the cupboard with the cash and jewellery that was stolen.
Originally from Bihar, Sanjay has worked with the Bhardwajs for three years. The MLA admitted that they had never got a servant verification done. According to Meera, Sanjay gets up at 7 a.m. everyday, collects the milk left at the door and then serves tea at 7.15 a.m. “Today, he rushed to me and said Didi, didi, the door is open’. But I heard him opening the grill. Then he said that the cupboard in the other room was open. I noticed that the suitcase with the cash was missing and also the leather pouches which have all my jewellery.”The Bhardwaj’s C-3/125 home in Ekta Gardens was buzzing with activity even till late in the afternoon. The family had called in some local shopkeepers for questioning. They allegedly revealed that recently Sanjay had been spending a lot of money. The MLA said: “His attitude had also changed in the last month or so. We were totally dependent on him.”
She pointed around the two-bedroom apartment which was in a state of total disarray and said: “See, we haven’t even had time to clean the place since the elections.” Meera was elected to the Mandawali seat in the November Assembly polls.
Her explanation for keeping so much money in the house: “Not all of it is ours. Most of it is my sister-in-law’s money. She lives with her family in Himachal Pradesh and we collect their rent for them.” And the jewellery: “I am always so busy. Who has the time these days to keep going to the bank and taking out the jewellery? So I keep it at home.”
The MLA returned from the Assembly session around 9 p.m. yesterday, only to rush out again for three jagrans. “I returned only around 12.30 a.m., the same time as my husband. Usually, my mother-in-law and daughter sleep in that room, but both of them had gone to a relative’s house for Navratri.” Her secretary Mukesh Sharma, who was sleeping on the sofa in the living room, said: “Around 3.30 a.m., I fell off the sofa. I woke up to find Sanjay watching TV. That was odd, given the fact that he has to get up so early in the morning. Anyway, I went back to sleep.
Meera said her purse, which also has the cupboard keys, was found in the kitchen. It was empty and the keys were hanging from the cupboard. “It was an inside job as the sniffer dogs that the police brought kept moving around in the house itself. The police also found an iron rod in the room. I have never bought such a rod in my life and I don’t know what Sanjay was planning to do with it.” A case of theft has been registered at the Mandawali Police Station.
