The Jammu and Kashmir government today agreed to extend the Amarnath Yatra by 15 days from the existing 30 days, a decision met with caution by the Congress, which said it would wait for religious groups to respond.

The decision was announced by state Governor S.K. Sinha, also chairman of the Amarnath Shrine Board.

In a statement, Sinha thanked CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for ‘‘readily and graciously’’ accepting his proposal for permitting religious rituals on July 2. The state government has also cleared the official yatra from July 15.

‘‘We will see whether the people are satisfied with the step,’’ senior Congress leader and Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma said.
