NAGPUR, APRIL 7: A police constable, attached to the traffic department, and his aide were arrested for beating a carpenter to death. Another accomplice, a teenager, was booked along with the duo for murder, wrongful confinement and common motive.

The 35-year-old victim, Uday Parasram Thakre, was kept confined by the trio in a room at Police Line Takli quarters for days together and beaten black and blue before he was taken back to his house at Indrayani Nagar and left there in a badly injured condition.

Thakre succumbed to his injuries though, a theory about the victim having been poisoned before he was left at his house was doing round. The police have sent the viscera for chemical analysis and more is expected to come out once they get the post-mortem report, sources said. Prime suspect constable Ashok Kalpnarain Tiwari is said to have told investigators that the victim had consumed French polish before he was taken back to his house, sources added.

Thakre’s senior colleague, Vishnudas Ramchandra Meshram (44) — who was engaged by Tiwari, sometime before Holi festival, to do some furniture work at his house in Takli — lodged a plaint early this morning accusing Tiwari and his aides of murder.
