Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje on Monday requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene a meeting of Chief Ministers of concerned states to discuss the Gujjar issue. In a letter to the Prime Minister, she said the issue was sensitive and the UPA government should take a decision on according Scheduled Tribe status to Gujjars. The Centre should frame a policy on the issue, Raje said in the letter, Rajasthan Parliamentary Affairs Minister R S Rathore told a press conference in Jaipur. In the letter, Raje suggested that Gujjars should also be considered for inclusion in the category of denotified class of tribals or nomads, which has provision of four to six per cent reservation. The decision to write the letter to the Prime Minister was taken at meeting of the Cabinet, presided over by Raje, Rathore said. To a question, he said the Congress should clearly spell out its stand on Gujjars' demand for ST tag. Rathore, flanked by three other Ministers, said the state government was ready for talks with the protesters provided they shun violence.
