PUNE, Oct 15: Additional sessions judge S.S. Phansalkar-Joshi today convicted police constable Uttam Pandurang Tandge of raping a minor girl and sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000.

The court sentenced Uttam’s wife Sunanda to two years rigorous imprisonment for helping Uttam in performing the crime. Uttam was living at Swargate police line. According to the prosecution, Tangde brought the minor girl to his residence under the pretext of sending her to Mahabaleshwar for a picnic with his daughter.

On May 8, 1996 night, he committed the crime in the presence of his wife. The court ordered that the amount of the fine should be paid to the victim as compensation. Additional public prosecutor Vijay Hole appeared for the State.
