A constable, accused of rape, was arrested today in Haroa, West Bengal.

Police said Constable S. Roychowdhury picked up the woman while she was at the Mazar of Pir Gorachand.

According to IG (Law and Order) C. Mukherjee, the woman had gone with her daughter to attend a weekly function on Thursday. Around midnight, Roychowdhury asked her to accompany him to the police station. Preliminary reports with the IG say that when she refused, he forcibly took her to an abandoned quarter nearby and raped her.

Locals caught the constable when they learnt about the incident this morning. Mukherjee said the constable was arrested and placed under suspension. SP Praveen Kumar said if the constable was guilty, action would be taken against him. He added that the woman has been sent for medical examination. Meanwhile, the district CPI(M) leadership and Congress supporters gheraoed the local police station.
