NAGPUR, DECEMBER 22: Tendering an apology on behalf of the State government for the Keshori massacre by an SRP policeman on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Friday announced Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. And in an unprecedented gesture, policemen and police department staffers from Nagpur division have decided to give a day’s salary, totalling Rs 15 lakh, to the aggrieved families to express regret.

A trigger-happy State Reserve policeman had shot dead five villagers and injured 11 on Monday night following an eve teasing incident.

Bhujbal today visited Keshori and consoled the grief-stricken families. He also assured that the government will think over giving employment to one member each of the families.

The Deputy Chief Minister also visited the place of massacre and the SRP camp and later paid tributes to those killed at a condolence meeting.

Speaking on the occasion he said, firing at innocent villagers was unfortunate and wrong and hence cannot be justified. A CID inquiry has begun and the guilty will definitely be punished, he assured. The Deputy CM also assured that care will be taken to prevent such incidents in future.

Bhujbal, however, said it would be wrong to damn the entire police force by citing the example of a single incident. We should not forget that the policemen have been carrying out their duties in the Naxal-hit areas at the risk of their lives, he said. This might well be the first case where policemen have atoned for the wrong-doing by their counterparts by contributing a day’s salary, Bhujbal pointed out.

Announcing the gesture, Special Inspector General of Police Prabir Kumar Chakravarty said the amount would be deposited with the District Superintendent of Police and the District Collector.
