Corporators rally behind prime plots

PUNE, Feb 26: A stiff opposition from corporators, cutting across political affiliations, today forced the standing committee to postpone any decision on allotting prime plots to various institutions.

A special meeting of the standing committee, tenure of which expired today, was expected to take decision on sensitive issue of allotting plots educational institutions. Today’s special meeting assumed significance since the standing committee had postponed any decision on the issue few months back. Out of 14 proposals, listed in the agenda of the special meeting, ten were related to prime plots.

The sources said the committee chairman Ramesh Bodke held informal discussions with corporators before the meeting began. Sensing strong opposition from the corporators, Bodke decided to postpone the meeting. The meeting was later adjourned due to lack of quorum.

Satish Misal of BJP, Shivaji Ksahirsagar of PVA and Nilesh Nikam of Congress urged the municipal corporation to allot a portion of the land of Deendayal Upadhyay municipal school to Abhinav School for extending its present building. The same three corporators have demanded that a plot in Yerwada at survey no 4A/1 and 4A/2, which is reserved for a primary school and playground should be allotted to Symbiosis Institute.

Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal also has moved a proposal to rent final plot number 550 – B, ad-measuring 3,035 square meters, in Duttawadi area to Progressive Education Society. He also proposed to allot a plot of three acres in Shivajinagar area to Maharashtra Technical Institute and Dnyan Prabodhini. Aksharnandan school has demanded the renewal of its agreement. The PMC has rented a building, admeasuring 1394 square meters to Aksharnandan. Interestingly, the civic school board has demanded that the building should be taken back to run a school at the same building.

A cooperative housing society of the civic employees has demanded three plots in Parvati area, admeasuring about 56,000 square feet, to construct their houses. Vijay Mohite of Congress has urged the committee to reconsider its decision allotting a chawl to Indira Mahila Laghu Udyog Sanstha.

Poona Hospital Research Centre has demanded on rent an existing building near Yeshwantrao Chavan bridge where corporation’s Dr Shantaram Jorvekar dispensary is located.

The corporators were apparently not in mood to allot plots to educational institutions since “they (educational institutions) never entertain their recommendations for admissions”.
