NEW DELHI, December 7: An elderly couple was threatened, attacked and robbed, reportedly by four youths, in west Nizamudin this evening. The boys — all between 20 to 25 years old — allegedly stole Rs 40,000, four gold bangles, a man’s gold ring, one gold chain, a pair of gold earrings, a VCR, some video tapes and a camera from the shop-cum-residence of Narender (55) and Pushpa (53) Gupta.

The incident took place at around 6.30 p.m.. The Guptas have a photography studio Shankar Studio on the ground floor. They also run a video cassette library. There is one room behind the shop on the ground floor, as well as additional rooms upstairs where they live.

Both husband and wife were in the shop in the evening and were getting ready to close for the day. Two young men reportedly walked into the studio and said that they needed to get some photographs taken. These two were immediately followed by two more. The boys jabbed Narender with the back of their knives, roughed up both husband and wife and tied them up in front of the bathroom on the ground floor. In the process, Pushpa suffered minor injuries on her thighs. She was later taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) by the police and was discharged after being administered first aid.

The police said that Rs 15,000 was stolen from the ground-floor wooden cupboard and Rs 25,000 was taken from another cupboard upstairs.

The youths left the shop by around 7 p.m. According to the police, no passersby saw them either enter the premises or leave. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the jewellery that was stolen was what the Guptas were wearing at the time of the incident. A case has been registered under Section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the IPC.
