Courageous constable rewarded with an out-of-turn promotion

NEW DELHI, January 3: Constable Ashok, who is posted with the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station in the central district, apprehended three robbers near the Prahlad Market last night, suffering serious spinal cord injuries during the incident. The constable has been given an out-of-turn promotion and made a head constable by the police commissioner for showing exceptional courage. His name is also being proposed for a gallantry award.

Two other constables who were on patrolling duty along with Ashok when the robbery took place have also been recommended for suitable rewards.

The three men arrested have been identified as Sonu (Surinder), Bobby (Sumeet) and Satya Parkash (Satte), all between 20 and 25 years of age. According to the police, the three robbed autorickshaw driver Mahesh Kumar of his earnings when he parked his vehicle near Prahlad Market around 9.30 p.m. Kumar immediately raised an alarm and caught the attention of Ashok, who was on patrolling duty along with two other constables. While they overpowered two of the men, the third escaped and ran towards an adjoining school. He climbed the school building and jumped from an eight-feet-tall wall to flee in the dark.

Ashok followed him, climbed the school building and jumped on him from the wall. Despite being seriously injured, the constable grabbed and held on to the fleeing man.

In the meantime, more personnel from the police station reached the spot and arrested the three men. They rushed Ashok to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where he is to be operated upon. On interrogation, Sonu, Bobby and Satya Prakash reportedly said that they were residents of Kotla Mubarakpur. The police said that Satya Parkash was the leader of the group and has been involved in several cases of murder, rape and criminal intimidation.

Investigations are on to ascertain any past criminal records of Sonu and Bobby. An FIR has been registered against the accused at the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station.
