The Supreme Court today issued a notice to Pappu Yadav, RJD’s candidate for the Madhepura Lok Sabha seat, and asked him to explain why the bail granted to him by the Patna High Court in the Ajit Sarkar murder case should not be suspended.

Responding to a petition filed by the deceased’s brother alleging that the bail had been granted to him in violation of the apex court’s earlier order, the bench asked Yadav to file his explanation within a week.

CBI supported the petitioner and even requested the bench comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde, Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice A.K. Mathur to cancel his bail ex-parte.

The Supreme Court has twice cancelled the bail granted to Yadav by the high court and four times upheld the rejection of his bail plea in connection with the same murder case. It had recently ordered his lodging in the prison instead of the Patna Medical College Hospital taking serious note of the misuse of facilities by the accused.

On the stand of CBI, Additional Solicitor General Amarendra Saran said: ‘‘It is a gross case and the apex court should cancel the bail granted to him ex-parte.’’
