At least three dozen cows and bulls were allegedly slaughtered and their heads thrown on the road in Bhalsuwa village, near Burari in Northwest Delhi, on Saturday.
Residents have, however, alleged that more than 70 cows were slaughtered and that the police are trying to hush up the matter by concealing the number of heads and torsos found. The police claimed seven-eight cows were killed.
The police said a call about the incident was received by them around 7 am. “We were told that heads and torsos of a number of cows were lying on the road. The caller said skins were also found hundred meters from the heads and torsos,” a senior police officer said.
When the police reached the spot, residents had already gathered around the area, which had to be cordoned off. “As the residents were angry about the inhumane act, reserve force had to be called in and the deputy commissioner of police went to the spot and assured locals of a proper investigation,” the senior officer said.
It took the police more than an hour to control the situation, as the residents were angry. Moreover, with elections being round the corner, political leaders from different parties also reached the spot and made allegations against each other. Due to the tense situation, the police had to call in more force.
Senior officers said that a resident of Indraprastha village told them that about half a dozen of his cows were stolen by someone three days ago. Dharmendar, who runs a dairy in the area and owns a dozen cows, said: “When I woke up, I found six of my cows missing. When I heard about today’s incident, I went to the spot. I recognised the heads of my cows and confirmed to the police that the dead cows were mine.”
The police said the heads and torsos have been sent for a postmortem. “We are waiting for the reports,” the station house officer of the local police station said.
Residents alleged that the police were trying to hush up the matter. “I have been here since morning and I saw the heads and torsos of more than 50 cows. The police are lying that there were just 7-8 cows. They are trying to cover up the matter,” said Hari Babu Gupta, a resident.
He took mediapersons to the spot where the remains and blood stains were found and said, “You can see that the remains cannot be of just 7-8 cows. Dozens of cows were slaughtered here.”
