CPM general-secretary Prakash Karat today said his party in West Bengal was under united attack from the extreme right and the extreme left and urged his comrades to unite against the onslaught.

He was delivering the opening speech at the 22nd State Conference of the CPM’s West Bengal unit in Mahajati Sadan.

“Forces ranging from the extremist right to the extremist left have united to fight us. We have been attacked everywhere in the country, but the attack here is fiercest because we are the strongest political force here. We must fight unitedly and resist all attempts to weaken us,” Karat said.

He said the US was trying to spread its hegemony and the Marxists had stood up to it. “It’s because of us the nuclear deal was stalled. The UPA Government cannot move a step without talking to us,” he said.

The other issues likely to be discussed at the meeting are becoming an alternative to the Congress and the BJP, land acquisition, unifying the leftist forces, and whether capitalism is the only way to industrialise West Bengal.
