MUMBAI, October 1: Central Railway kept their Gulf Oil WIFA Super Division title hopes alive when they edged past Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers 1-0 at the Cooperage today.

Augusto D’Silva saved the day for the Railwaymen with a goal in the 79th minute to put CR on 24 points with one match to go. CR play League leaders Air-India next. A-I have 26 points and need just a draw against CR for the title. The Railwaymen, however, need to win.

The listless match seemed headed for a draw when a move on the right proved fruitful. Narendran sent a long forward pass to Asif Jamal who evaded two defenders before sending a centre to D’Silva for the winner. And the railwaymen held on to the slender lead for the next 11 minutes.

The CR strikeforce lacked the necessary bite. Jamal, suffering from a flu for the last three days, still managed to make himself useful with the vital pass to D’Silva after coming in for Chirag Shaikh at half-time.

RCF did give CR a difficult time, defending well and playing smart short passes to keep the momentum going. Doughlas D’Sena latched on to a well placed forward ball from Ratan Singh in the 27th minute, at the edge of the box, with CR defenders far behind. He shot wide and slow past the far post with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Three minutes before close, Ratan’s corner kick was headed in by substitute Sajju Govindan, but goalkeeper Raghu Khanolkar managed to hang on despite a fumble. And with that ended their chance of figuring in the top three.RCF complete their League engagements with 18 points with four wins and six draws and are placed fourth.
