‘Cricketers shouldn’t be walking the ramp’

Commercialisation of cricket and auction of the players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) figured in the Lok Sabha discussion on Thursday with a BJP member objecting to the ramp walk by the cricketers.

“Sportspersons are being asked to walk on the ramp because they have been purchased by certain people and business houses”, said BJP MP Sumitra Mahajan while participating in a discussion on Demands for Grants of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

“Cricketers walk on the ramp with their heads down,” she lamented while referring to the ramp walks organised

by the owners of the IPL cricket teams.

Regretting that BCCI was trying to stop Doordarshan and Akashvani from airing cricket matches, Congress member Devwrat Singh said, “All matches in which Indian team represents the country must be shown by Doordarshan” and the commentary be broadcast live on All India Radio.

The government, he added, should initiate measures in this regard as Doordarshan and Akashvani cater to a large number of people across the country.
