ACB traps Ambernath council official, clerk

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) nabbed the chief officer of Ambernath Municipal Council Madhavrao V Shejul and a senior clerk Sampath Gaikwad this morning. Gaikwad was caught accepting Rs 2,000 from builder Chhabildas Patil for issuing an NOC for water connection. The money was the second installment of the Rs 3,000 demanded by Shejul and Gaikwad. The builder, who had already paid Rs 1,000, later alerted the ACB.

Attack on Bhujbal home: 58 Sainiks summoned

Nearly two years after leader of the opposition in the legislative council Chhagan Bhujbal’s official residence was vandalised, the police filed a chargesheet against 58 Shiv Sena activists on Monday. The case is scheduled for hearing on April 3.Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate K H Holambe Patil at the 19th Esplanade Court issued summons to the accused charged under section 141, 143, 145, 149 and 452 of the IPC. The incident took place on July 13, 1997 when nearly 500-odd alleged Senaactivists barged into Bhujbal’s residence at Madame Cama Road, opposite Mantralaya. After ransacking the place they allegedly took away a bust of Chhatrapati Shivaji’s and a life-size photograph. The mob also smashed the windscreen of Bhujbal’s car as they shouted slogans of down with Lakhoba’. Among the accused are South Mumbai Shiv Sena vibhag pramukh Prakash Bhavad, MHADA president Vilas Avchat, Sena corporators Prakash Ahire, Surekha Godambe, Randhir Kopte, Dadar vibhag pramukh Vinod Khopkar and Sena activist Dattaram Gujar.

Bail refused to accused in Chandanwadi firing

The Sessions Court on Tuesday rejected the bail application of a doctor owing allegiance to the Abu Salem gang in the Chandanwadi firing case. Two passerby were killed and five others injured in the indiscriminate firing in January this year.

According to the L T Marg police Dr Arshad Kamal Shaikh allegedly gave contract to the killers.

Tax fraud: No bail for father, son

Principal Sessions Judge A S Aguiar todayrejected the anticipatory bail applications of a father and son who allegedly failed to pay sales tax dues to the tune of Rs 25 lakh during the period 1994-95.

Pushkarmal Bhandari and his son Deepak, chairman and managing director of Madalsa International Ltd, had failed to file returns on Rs 25 lakh sales tax on Rs 2.75 crore worth tobacco processing machinery sold to ITC Classic Finance.
